Plans Already Being Made For Weston 2009
Now the Weston Beach Race is over many may think that the event organisers, RHL Activities, will be kicking back and relaxing. But this is certainly not the case…
Immediately after the final race was over on Sunday event planning began for the Weston Beach Race in 2009, which once again will be bigger, and better than ever.
The mammoth task of running such an event takes a small management team of completely dedicated people, along with a support crew of 287 personnel, most of which were supplied this year by Yes Recruitment. Each and every person including Marshalls, Health & Safety, Security, Catering, Paramedics are necessary for the races to run, but the work that goes on behind the scenes is certainly not for the faint hearted.
"This year's event was very good. The weather was most certainly on our side, but the spectators got to see some really good racing and we attracted a real variety of people down to Weston-super-Mare" said Director of RHL Activities, Gareth Hockey.
"Unfortunately I'm not a man that's easily pleased, and we'll always be looking for ways to make things better. We've been running this event for quite a few years now, but this year particularly we have made big steps forward, maybe some are not so visible yet as they are behind the scenes, but I hope RHL Activities can continue in this way. In 2009 we will endeavour to improve the event further as it's a really great weekend out, and I hope year-upon-year we can make the Weston Beach Race better than ever" concluded Hockey.
This year's event attracted a total crowd figure of 118,031 people who were lucky enough to see some of the most exhilirating, yet slightly mad racing provided by some of the world's finest riders against those that wanted to take on the three-hour challenge. 10 times World Champion Stefan Everts took the victory honours in the main solo race, while British MX2 Champion Shaun Simpson finished second and Jamie Lewis crossed the line in third. Frencham Jeremie Warnia won overall in Saturday's quad race.
Once all of the administration tasks have been finished and all of the crews have been debriefed, planning will continue for all of the events that RHL Activities are involved in next year… watch this space!
